Rating: High Five

Who I'd Recommend to: Fans of Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and other amazing, mystery, norse mythology books.

Synopsis (from Amazon): Trapped in a hidden fortress tucked between towering mountains and a frozen sea, Solveig, along with her brother the crown prince, their older sister, and an army of restless warriors, anxiously awaits news of her father's victory at battle. But as winter stretches on, and the unending ice refuses to break, terrible acts of treachery soon make it clear that a traitor lurks in their midst. A malevolent air begins to seep through the fortress walls, as a smothering claustrophobia slowly turns these prisoners of winter against one another. Those charged with protecting the king's children are all suspect, and the siblings must choose their allies wisely. But who can be trusted so far from their father's watchful eye? Can Solveig survive the long winter months and expose the traitor before he manages to destroy a kingdom?

Thoughts: This book got better with every page turn. I loved this amazing book, when I started reading Icefall by Matthew J. Kirby I thought it was going to be just okay, maybe a little better. But, when I was one third of the way through Icefall it got better and better and better, until it was in my top twenty favorite books. I loved how Matthew J. Kirby made the story more about the characters than any objective, like most books I read: to survive, to get a weapon, to win a war, to escape. For example, I loved how Solveig the main character was a princess, but in the end didn't want to be just a princess so she became a skald. Another example, is Asa Solveig's sister didn't want to be married off to a random person, instead she wanted to be with Per. Since she wanted to be with Per, it started a war and because of the war, Asa felt very ashamed of herself. I also loved the relationship between Harald, a berserker and Solveig. Throughout the entire book, they had an interesting relationship and were constantly trying to protect each other. Finally, I loved Alric. The reason I loved Alric, is in the entire book he seems like the villain, but at the same time he is teaching Solveig and in the end saves them all. Overall, I loved this amazing, better every page turn, norse mythology, complex book.
