Rating: High Five

Who I'd Recommend to: Fans of anything Jerry Spinelli, Ida B., Blackbird Fly, and My Diary From the Edge of the World.

Synopsis (from Amazon):
You are now entering Ruby Holler, the one and only Ruby Holler! Your lives are never going to be the same—"

"Trouble twins" Dallas and Florida are orphans who have given up believing there is such a thing as a loving home. Tiller and Sairy are an eccentric older couple who live in the beautiful, mysterious Ruby Holler, but they’re restless for one more big adventure. When they invite the twins to join them on their journeys, they first must all stay together in the Holler, and the magic of the place takes over. Two pairs of lives grow closer and are changed forever.

Thoughts: This was a reread, since I read this book when I did the Battle of the Books three years ago, and my brother is now reading up a storm to try to get in. Ruby Holler appeared in both my book list and Oscar's, so when he picked it up I thought I should, too, just to see if my thoughts would be any different than the first time I read it. They were. I liked it even more than the first time, probably because I have greater appreciation (and patience) for books like this than I did before [when all I could get into were books by the Erin Hunter team (Warriors, Survivors, Seekers, etc.)].

This book.... *sighs.* Sharon Creech is an insanely talented writer, and I feel like it shows the most in this book. It was riveting and exciting while still being bittersweet and touching, something that I feel isn't easily pulled off. The characters were fantastic, and at times, I felt like they were real, having a conversation right in front of me. There was a dash of mystery and a twist to the usual cliches, too, which I feel really escalated how moving, satisfying, and thrilling the ending was. Ruby Holler is also very humorous, so in a sense, this was a bit of a light read. Overall, my favorite Sharon Creech book and a fantastic read for younger readers.
